Transplant nephrologist, Brigham and Women’s Hospital
Dr. Abdi is a transplant nephrologist at Brigham and Women’s Hospital and the Director of the Transplantation Research Center (TRC). He is also a Professor of Medicine at Harvard Medical School. TRC has a longstanding tradition of training world-class transplant immunologists, with a legacy rooted in the pioneering work of Dr. John Merrill, one of the founding fathers of modern nephrology. Dr. Merrill developed the first working dialysis machine and established the world’s first dialysis-to-renal transplant program, laying the groundwork for modern kidney transplantation. This foundation has allowed the center to flourish as a hub for cutting-edge transplant research, mentoring and training the next generation of leaders in the field. Many of Dr. Abdi's former mentees have since secured career development awards and RO1 grants, reflecting the center’s commitment to advancing scientific discovery and translational medicine.
The center is home to numerous investigators, including RO1-funded researchers, who focus on a broad spectrum of immune-related disciplines, including transplant immunity, vaccines, allergy, tumor immunity, and autoimmunity. With a dedication to harnessing cutting-edge technology and translational science, the center aims to develop innovative strategies to address refractory immune conditions and improve patient outcomes. Through its multidisciplinary approach, the TRC continues to push the boundaries of transplant immunology, shaping the future of the field while upholding its rich legacy of excellence in research and mentorship.
